When to Visit Our Pediatric Eye Doctor
It's generally recommended to conduct a pediatric eye exam for your infant at 6 months old. Afterward, it's best to start visiting a pediatric eye doctor regularly when your children turns 5 years old. Once every one or two years is a good rule of thumb.
However, if your child has existing vision disorders, including:
- Cross eyed
- Lazy eye
- Astigmatism
- Nearsightedness
- Farsightedness
It's a good idea to visit the eye doctor every year for a pediatric eye exam.
How a Pediatric Eye Exam Helps
Your family eye doctor will be able to diagnose any vision disorder your child has with the help of a pediatric eye exam. They will also be able to help your child if you think they are struggling with a vision disorder.
Signs that your child may need a pediatric eye exam include:
- Pre-existing vision disorders
- Genetic abnormalities of the eye
- Family history of vision disorders
- If they need to sit in the front of class to see
- If they complain of doing poorly in school due to not being able to see
- Frequent headaches
- Squinting of the eyes
During a pediatric eye exam, our pediatric eye doctor may:
- Conduct vision tests using an eye chart
- Check for proper alignment and eye function using a light and asking your child to track toys or images
- Dilate the eye and using eye drops to check for refractive errors
- Conduct a retinoscopy test to determine prescription for eyeglasses
These tests are not painful and can provide valuable information to our eye doctor about your child's eye health.
