Children's Vision

Optometry Service for Children

If your child has come home from school recently complaining about blurry vision or the inability to see the things that his or her friends can see (usually kids notice when they can't see the whiteboard at the front of the classroom), it's time to schedule them for an eye exam. Eye exams are a routine part of good eye care.

During the eye exam, one of our eye doctors and his or her technicians will establish some basic information about your child's eyes, such as their size and pressure level. He or she will also be able to measure the eye to determine if vision correction is needed. This measurement is done very quickly with a machine that the child will only perceive as a puff of air or a flash of bright light.

Although the measuring equipment can steer our doctor in the right direction, it is often necessary to manually test the child to determine the exact type of vision correction that will be most ideal. This part of the exam is one most parents are familiar with; the child is asked to read letters from a chart. If your child does not yet know all his or her letters, a special eye chart using pictures.

After the exam, an eye doctor at our practice will take the time to discuss various methods of vision correction with the parents. For smaller children, eyeglasses are usually recommended. However, older children who can show that they are responsible can be considered good candidates for contact lenses.

An eye doctor on our team may also choose to discuss the possibility of using eye drops to slow down the progression of conditions such as myopia. These are relatively new, and they contain a protein that will slow down the progression of myopia by preventing the eye from changing shape.
