It’s back to school season once again. One of the things that should be on your priority list is taking your child for an eye exam. Shermin Lahijani OD, Hollywood Optometrist, is a reputable pediatric eye care specialist in L.A. Here are her insights on the importance of back to school eye exams.

An Eye Exam Can Improve Your Child’s Classroom Success

Many children are experiencing new and additional difficulty with their vision because of the tremendous increase in screen usage with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.  As your children progress through school, they experience increasing pressure on their visual abilities. They become exposed to textbooks with smaller prints and have to spend more time reading, studying,  and using digital technology. If your children have their visual needs met (with glasses or contact lenses), they will have an easier time reading smaller prints in textbooks and on computer screens as well as  seeing what the teacher is writing on the whiteboard.

As a result, they are likely to post better academic performance. On the other hand, poor vision means that your children will have difficulties reading the textbooks, the classroom whiteboard, and engaging on computer screens.  This will negatively impact a child's ability to learn.

Taking your children for an examination at an optometry clinic will help you figure out if they have any visual problems that might affect their performance. If they do, they will be provided with eye wear that will improve their vision, giving them a better shot at academic success. In addition to eyeglasses, we also provide contact lens exams for children.

Poor Vision Can Negatively Affect Your Child’s Social Life

Poor vision can deny your children a chance to have a normal life outside like other kids. They might be unable to participate in sports and do most of the other things their peers do. Taking your children for an eye exam will identify and address their vision issues. If your kids have active lifestyles or want to be more discreet about the state of their vision, they can opt for contact lenses over normal eye wear.
